Commendations

Commendations

In the entire history of cinema, especially in the classic black and white period I have encounter particular moments, scenes, or images that became most memorable for me, these defining film moments come from some of the all-time best scenes or images in motion pictures - a homage to the filmmakers that have made an indelible imprint upon our memories and collective visual consciousness - and can't be forgotten. They have all become emblematic, and have taken on a life of their own, and are usually easily recognizable - from just one screenshot.

With these images I like to play with the idea of what was beyond those iconic images, a sort of meta-text or meta-images. I’m looking for the spirit of those movies in nowadays places.

Krasker's Eye

These photographs are loosely based on the iconic film noir  “The Third Man,” shot by australian cinematographer Robert Krasker. The Third Man revels in its angular, high-contrast, almost surreal look. Its shots are filled with sharply composed lines, shadows, and off-angle compositions. Layer upon layer of shadows are placed within the frame, and the architecture leans in every direction. Clearly inspired by German expressionist cinema, Krasker turned Vienna into a mysterious, incomprehensible environment with no seemingly stable center, and Dutch angles are everywhere, right from the start.

The film mesmerized me by its use of architecture as another character, by how Krasker illuminated the city and especially by the use of camera angles and framing. I can imagine Robert Krasker and Carol Reed looking for filming locations totally inspired by the city's post-war architecture.
